Student Mania

February 5th, 2010

We took to the classrooms last week, and today it was our turn to play host. It was a pleasure to welcome some of the local 5th year students, it’s not too often we get to be interviewed by such an enthuastic bunch! It was a really upbeat session, discussing close to 14 years of business life’s lessons in 90 minutes. The students themselves have a varied range of future careers in mind – Law, Business Studies, Teacher, Obstetrician, Architect. We always hope that students can take something valuable from these discussions, all part and parcel of shaping their future career choices, and it’s great to see students taking every opportunity to be as informed as possible.

Our director Alison had her first taste of business when she was in Transition Year, and firmly believes that this experience helped shape her career direction. Having been so young herself starting out in business, she holds motivated young people in great esteem!

As close as it gets to NASA

We’ve always welcomed work experience students to Polar Ice and we certainly have a knack for picking impressive individuals. We’re probably more excited than the students themselves coming in – there’s no gratuitous filing here – we put them straight into the work environment, and like the man from Del Monte, Alison squeezes the best out of them!

So when we met 16 year old Ashling, from The Sacred Heart School in Tullamore, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make the most of her incredible achievements to date, and natural aptitude for science.

Ashling, a transition year student, was chosen to study Applied Physics in Dublin City University for Semester One 2009. She didn’t just study it, she nailed it, finishing top of her class in her exams.

It wasn’t long before Ashling was busy researching and documenting numerous and varied science experiments involving Dry Ice. Before her work experience week was over, Ashling successfully demonstrated a number of her Dry Ice experiments to almost 100 secondary school science students in Coláiste Íosagáin, Portarlington.

Ashling intends to study Physics at Stanford University, near San Francisco, in the USA. Her ultimate goal – to work in NASA. We wish her every success in her future career.
